Safe in Blue

The Pub, The Plea The Plan

I recently got back from a trip over seas. My brother, his girlfriend, my girlfriend, and I traveled through Europe. We started in Portugal where we stayed in a small coastal town called Sagres for a week. We ate fresh sea food, swam, and saw an old fort built on the cliff side to protect Portugal from the invading English. One of my favorite moments involved a new song and my clever brother. I was pacing back and forth on our lawn strumming my guitar. A couple of lines had presented themselves to me and I was attempting to put them to music. I had been stuck on a specific line for the last half hour. Being very gifted at song crafting, Hein, my brother, came out and mumbled a few phrases that he had heard in his head while I was playing. In a matter of minutes we finished the song and sang it over and over again on the lawn as the Portuguese sun set.

Next I spent a few days in Amsterdam. We have been releasing one song a month this summer and had not released our July song yet mostly because of my travels. I booked time at a studio called Earforce to finish the mixing. The studio had lots of cool analog equipment and sat right next to a canal. I mixed as I watched boats and barges float past. Reinder, the owner, heard the new tune and helped out with a lot of the mixing. He did a splendid job.

This song came to us differently. It was actually written in parts over the period of two years. It is not the standard ABAB type tune. Instead it’s a three part song that conveys a progressing story. The opening melodic riff is used later in the song to divide each musical vignette. As with many of our songs, the story is about love, loss, and purpose. The first part titled “The Pub” was inspired by a scene at an English bar. I can’t remember if this scene really happened or if we just saw it in a movie. My hope is to one day create a music video to convey this story fully, but for now you can listen and create your own story. This trip inspired so many songs and I cannot wait to share them with you all.
